Consequences of Suspension & Expulsion

Consequences of suspension and expulsion

If you are enrolled in classes during the semester you are suspended or expelled, you will be withdrawn from your classes with W grades. You can either withdraw yourself from classes via the instructions found on the following web page. Or, the Office of the Registrar will administratively withdraw you from classes once the suspension or expulsion is final.

During a period of suspension, you cannot register for classes on the IU Indianapolis campus or any other IU campus.

Your registration privileges will be reinstated the first business day after your suspension ends. However, if you have a hold on your account for any other reasons (for example, unresolved disciplinary matters, unpaid tuition, overdue parking fines, or poor academic performance), you will need to resolve those matters before you can register for classes.

If you choose to take classes from another non-IU campus, contact your academic advisor—when not under suspension—to determine if your credits will transfer. Transferring credits to IU is dependent on a variety of factors, including what courses they are, where they are being transferred, and what degree requirements they might fulfill for you. Students who are expelled are permanently ineligible to register for any classes, on any IU campuses.

When you are suspended, a notation is placed on your transcript that you are suspended from Indiana University Indianapolis.

All activities through the Registrar’s Office are restricted during your suspension, including the ability to request an official transcript. However, for the purposes of transferring to another college or university, an exception is usually granted.

If you would like to request a transcript for the purposes of transferring to another college or university, contact the Office of the Dean of Students.

When your suspension ends, the notation is removed from your transcript, and access to the registrar is reinstated.

If you are expelled, a notation of expulsion is permanently placed on your transcript. A request for your transcript may be made. To make that request, contact the Office of the Dean of Students.

Students who are suspended or expelled forfeit tuition, fees, and grades (if applicable) for the semester in which they are suspended or expelled. If students have questions about their tuition and fees, they would contact the Office of the Bursar. Questions about grades can be sent to the Office of the Registrar.

Students living in IU Indianapolis residence halls must be enrolled in classes; therefore, those who are expelled or suspended cannot reside in these halls. See information about cancelling your housing contract.

Periods of suspension are considered a separation between the student and the university. As such, suspended students do not have access to any university services for the duration of the suspension. This includes but is not limited to:

  • University counseling or advising services
  • General academic advising appointments
  • Engaging with faculty about academic work

Students who are suspended or expelled do not have access to university services, but may contact the Office of the Dean of Students with questions.

If a person is criminally trespassed from the institution while on suspension, or if they are expelled, they will not be permitted to access Campus Recreation services. However, if a person is suspended but not criminally trespassed, and they have opted into the Campus Recreation fee, they will be able to use Campus Recreation services.

If a person is suspended or expelled from the institution, they are prohibited from all university-related activities at all Indiana University campuses.
