IU Indianapolis opens new Esports Lounge

The sound of clicking keyboards, excited chatter and digital battles filled the air as IU Indianapolis celebrated the grand opening of its new Esports Lounge on Wednesday, Oct. 15, inside the Campus Center.

The event drew dozens of students, faculty and staff eager to explore the state-of-the-art gaming space and experience what’s quickly becoming one of the most engaging hangouts on campus.

A grand opening to remember

Throughout the afternoon, over 75 attendees tested out the new setups, challenged friends or matches and watched live demonstrations on large screens. After a ribbon-cutting, guests poured into the center to play and explore with Provost Jay Gladden and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Dr. Eric Weldy.

The lounge's cool, inviting vibe — bright lights, neon accents and rows of high-end stations — made it easy for gamers to connect. As the sign outside the lounge read, "Get Ready to Game," students did exactly that. Jaguars gathered in friendly competition, cheering one another on and sharing strategies, which embodies the community-driven spirit that the lounge hopes to foster year-round.

Esports Specialist Brooke Bonek said, "The highlight for me was everyone playing games all together and Provost Gladden and Dr. Weldy asking questions and learning more about esports along with everyone who attended."

A space designed for connection and competition

Managed by Campus Recreation, the new lounge combines IU’s signature crimson palette with sleek, modern design. LED accent lighting and geometric wall patterns give the space a professional esports aesthetic that feels both futuristic and welcoming.

Inside, rows of high-performance Alienware gaming PCs line the room, each paired with ergonomic chairs, headsets and high-resolution monitors. Large display screens showcase live gameplay from popular titles like "Valorant," 'Rocket League" and 'Tekken," while console stations invite casual players to jump in for quick matches.

More than just gaming

While the Esports Lounge is a major win for IU Indy’s competitive gamers, it'a also designed as a student hub.

"This space is not just about games, it’s about community," said one student attendee. "It’s a cool way for people who might not have met otherwise to connect over something they enjoy."

The lounge will support esports team practices, student organizations' events and casual gaming sessions. Students who are interested in utilizing this space must opt into their rec fee.

The launch of the Esports Lounge reflects IU Indianapolis’s ongoing investment in technology, innovation and student life. As gaming continues to rise in popularity, the university joins other campuses nationwide in recognizing the academic and social value of esports.
